Pressbooks as Open Courseware Platform: An Open Alternative to Expensive Proprietary Solutions

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Pressbooks is widely-trusted open textbook publishing software. Using Pressbooks, authors can create public webbooks and freely available export files in several offline container formats. Pressbooks also features integrations with other open-source third-party tools (like H5P, Hypothesis, and MathJax) which, when combined, allow users to create interactive learning experiences that resemble the products of proprietary eLearning authoring platforms like Adobe Captivate, Articulate Storyline, or Inkling Habitat. We want Pressbooks to become a pillar of a broader open-source publishing infrastructure which allows users to produce not just media-rich, interactive books but also ‘courseware’. Enabling institutions to use Pressbooks as an open ‘courseware’ creation platform will require helping interested parties better understand how learning happens in Pressbooks. In practical terms this means adding support for grade reporting and other forms of learning analytics to interactive learning material published with Pressbooks. In this presentation, I'll show how institutions and individuals can use Pressbooks to publish freely available, interactive courseware.
